Book Description:  Soul Sisters is an urban fantasy novel about African-American twin sisters Ani and Dana who have a rather unique secret: one sister is human while the other is a vampire. While the sisters have lived peacefully with each other for many years one fateful night will change both their lives forever. When a drunken man tries to attack Dana (the human sister) Ani (the vampire sister) protects her sister with all of her ferocious power.

However, when the vampire’s leader Donovan finds out about the public display he calls for the sisters to be assassinated for disobedience. Ani and Dana now are in for the fight of their lives to protect each other as well as the lives of their dedicated friends who have joined them on their mission for survival. If Dana and Ani can make it through this time of uncertainty, Ani can take her new place as vampire queen. Soul Sisters is expected to be a trilogy; The book also features a multicultural cast of characters that brings a new edge of chic to the vampire world.

My Review:  This is a unique premise with characters that are rarely seen in most of the vampire stories I have read.  Additionally, the ‘creation story’ for Ani was very cleverly presented, and provided a pair of immortals who are inexorably connected in so many ways.    The author shows great promise, dealing with characters that develop into fully realized beings while still providing a very clearly defined set of differences for the two sisters.  Attitudes and responses are well delineated with a sense of reality that is easy to relate to, even though the situations the characters encounter are wholly unfamiliar to most readers.

Sadly, there were too many issues in the construct and presentation of the book that would not allow a higher rating.  The book most certainly could have used another round with a professional editor, and at least one more Beta Reader.  There are grammatical errors and some character contradictions where one sister’s name is quite clearly misplaced.  Additionally, I had previously purchased a copy of this book before the opportunity to review arrived – and there are some fairly frequent and glaring formatting errors: left side justifications that are incorrect, some paragraph errors where one paragraph ends without warning and another starts, text formatting errors, etc.:  severely impacting the reading experience.  Sadly, the finished product did detract from the expectations and promise shown.

I would most certainly keep an eye out for other work by this author, in the hopes that future works take the need for editing and beta readers into account.

I reviewed a previously purchased copy of the book for purpose of honest review for Full Moon Bites tours. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.
