About the Book:
At the young age of eighteen, tragedy and a dark secret force Lara to flee all she has known and loved to start a new life. Now years later, with a new identity as Amy, she’s finally dared to believe she is forgotten-even if she cannot forget. But just when she lets her guard down, the ghosts of her past are quick to punish her, forcing her back on the run.
On a plane, struggling to face the devastation of losing everything again and starting over, Amy meets Liam Stone, a darkly entrancing recluse billionaire, who is also a brilliant, and famous, prodigy architect. A man who knows what he wants and goes after it. And what he wants is Amy. Refusing to take “no” as an answer, he sweeps her into a passionate affair, pushing her to her erotic limits. He wants to possess her. He makes her want to be possessed. Liam demands everything from her, accepting nothing less. But what if she is too devastated by tragedy to know when he wants more than she should give? And what if there is more to Liam than meets the eyes?
One of the best and worst parts of being a book reviewer is finding ‘new to you’ authors that you enjoy, and finding a new series before everyone else. Unfortunately, as a book reviewer I can’t ONLY read the books I want to read, but that I also now have to wait what feels like forever for the next book in the new series. This is exactly what happened to me with Lisa Renee Jones. Her new release, Escaping Reality is that new series for me, and I, just like you, have to wait for the next book.
In this New Adult series, we meet Lara / Amy, running from some unknown deadly threat, and starting over once again. Her story is instantly engaging, Jones writes in the first person point of view, and her ability to convey the terror, emotion and develop her characters using this perspective is one of the best I have seen. Inside Amy’s head we are privy to her justifications, her retreats and her fears. Her erratic behavior almost becomes a new normal: we aren’t seeing it as so odd because we have her perspective on the episodes, but even her internal monologue is guarded.
When she meets Liam on the flight from New York to Denver, the connection is electric, and he sees someone he wants to know, who needs protection and help. Barely opening up to Liam, Amy is slowly developing a reliance on Liam, despite her fears that his caring for her will lead to death and loss: his death and her loss. Their relationship does grow, strong sexual attraction and a solid sexual tension feed their connection: Liam is willing to share bits of himself with her , but when the time comes for Amy to share….
Bits of the backstory are coming forward as Amy revisits her nightmares and concerns, making the whole situation feel more treacherous and dangerous: every déjà vu moment Amy has, we experience it with her as we have only the information that she has shared, that she can remember, or that she wants to remember. This makes her character feel very real and present, when you are afraid enough to run, you see signs of danger everywhere, and connections can often be created from coincidence to feed that fear. Constantly I was feeling eyes on the back of my neck, the emotional impact of the unknown is that well defined. A gipping story that I read in one sitting, this is a book that will change your impression of first person point of view stories and the New Adult genre for the positive.
I received an ARC from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
