About the Book:

Raised in Chicago’s Latino working class community during the Sixties, Alicia Barron uncovers her mother’s Caucasian roots when she inherits a time-worn mansion, the remnant of the estate of a Chicago industrialist who, she discovers, is her grandfather. Her search of the house takes her into the lives of past generations of women whose love carried them across forbidden boundaries, and into the conflict of class, nationality, and race that is the history of the city itself. The identity she finds there, however, leads to increasing conflict with her first great love, Ricardo Moreno, who wants Alicia to reject her gringo roots.

Book Review:

I am not familiar with either the feel of the 1960’s or Chicago: most of my information is gleaned from books and film of the times.  Fortunately, neither is needed to understand the characters in this book, in fact, this story could be set anywhere in any country, nearly at any point in modern history.   Tackling the sensitive issues of discrimination and racism, Kirscht has taken the standard box from which those stories are most often gleaned and turned it on its end.  While everyone is familiar with racism and discrimination in a big picture sort of way: majority group uses their power to constrain a minority.  Unless you are a member of a minority group, you are probably unaware of, or less aware of the subtle and not so subtle tensions that occur within those minority groups,

As this story progresses you will become highly aware of those subtle distinctions and slights that are used within communities that are nothing short of senseless discrimination.  The contrast in attitude and acceptance in her childhood neighborhood in the intervening 20 years is glaring: the acceptance of others seems to have been replaced with insularity and mistrust with a distinctive conflict arising for those of mixed heritage.  Pushing her to ignore or deny her white heritage is Ricardo, a fellow teacher and her love interest.  Interestingly, his extreme reactions to her mixed racial heritage arrived when she decided to explore her mother’s family, and discovered that she too was a woman with a blended history. As Alicia delves deeper into her own family history, she finds answers and acceptance in the fact that these women overcame difficulties, crossed borders and loved despite differences, not similarities.

Throughout the story we are treated to several different views on national and cultural pride, all giving rise to the ultimate lessons about what it means to be American, with or without a distinct mixed heritage.  Plausibly laying the groundwork for misunderstandings that created these tensions, Kirscht has managed to provide a story that while it deals with Latinos in the specific, could be applied to any subset of any town, and provides plenty of food for thought about your own perspective on your own cultural ties and associations.

About the Book:

The Single Dad:
Ex-military man Derrick Richmond. Solitary and satisfied…until little Timmy was dropped into his lap and Derrick had to learn to be somebody’s daddy.

The Single Woman:
Schoolteacher Anna Maxwell. Fate might have denied her a family of her own, but Anna still had plenty of love to give, if only someone would notice.

The Solution:
Anna would teach Derrick all he needed to know about kids. Father and son would give Anna some precious memories. Then the schoolteacher and the single dad would go their separate ways. Unless one little boy figured out a way to make Miss Maxwell become his mom!

Book Review:

It should come as no surprise that I love this author’s books and writing style: the more traditional form of romance that is character driven, relates to people in all situations and places in life and has a happy ending are just the thing for a quiet afternoon curled up with a book.

This story is written with heart and emotion clear on the page. Derrick is both perfectly suited to parenthood and completely clueless about ‘parenting’ and not just being a friend. Of course, he’s made huge changes In his life to accommodate his new situation, he just needs a crash course. Anna is that perfect choice, logically, as she is a teacher and has ‘experience’ with kids. Her personal style and commitment to her lessons and the children, however, create real issues for the former strictly controlled and scheduled military man.

In incremental pieces, Donna Fasano shows Derrick, and the reader by extension, that strict adherence to schedules and planning every facet of every day is literally impossible when dealing with children. From his initial irritation with Anna not being in the appointed place, to her suggestions that Timmy help carry and plan; Derrick is learning to loosen up and go with the flow, even if he doesn’t like the idea.

As the sparks fly and Anna is convinced that Derrick needs a woman who can give him more children – the true conflict arises. His approach and direct confrontation is a scene that will win your heart –even if you aren’t half in love with him already, his character is that well created. And everyone will wish for a teacher like Anna for their young children: dedicated, excited and truly a source of learning and inspiration for her class with an approach that teaches personal responsibility and shows empathy, not just recitation of a lesson.

There are no great mysteries here: everyone learns something about themselves, about their heart, and about trusting in love to conquer all. With a happy ever after that is even sweeter in the telling, you too will be a fan of this story.

About the Book:

What does a man say to the woman he betrayed but never stopped loving?
Three years ago, Zachary Steele refused to entertain thoughts of permanency with any woman. A hedonist at heart, he didn’t want to corrupt the much younger, Madigan DeLeon, by continuing his affair with her. With the hidden scars of his past, he didn’t believe in happily-ever-after. By the time he realized how much Madigan meant to him, he’d driven her away. Then, one night, after being clean for a number of years, Zach briefly falls off the bandwagon. He believes his lovemaking to Madi is a drug-induced hallucination. The resulting consequences tell another story.

What does a woman do when the only man she’s ever loved hurt her so deeply she feared she’d never recover ?
Three years after her affair with Zach so abruptly ended, celebutante, Madigan DeLeon, is thrust back into Zach’s life by her mother’s machinations. Brought home under the false pretenses of repairing her damaged relationship with her mother, Madi instead finds herself running a private sex club called Wicked Allure. Forced to confront her anger at his betrayal and grief at the loss of what might’ve been, Madi faces the realization that she’s never stopped loving Zach.

Can two broken hearts set aside anger and betrayal to find true love once and for all?
Searching the deepest recesses of their hearts, in a place where pride and pain has no room, Madi and Zach must decide if their bond is strong enough to take a second chance at love. Or if resuming their sexual relationship is an irresistible wicked allure and the ghosts of their former relationship will finally, and forever, sever all ties between them.

AudioBook Review:

I had read the book last year, and loved the storyline and characters: complex and loaded with emotion, baggage and the interfering hand of an overbearing and dictatorial matriarch there were many elements that enhanced the tension. Madi’s anger and Zach’s guilt were palpable and the repeated dramatic climaxes provided a never-ending thrill ride from one scene to the next. Both Madi and Zach develop and grow throughout the book, with personal insights that enable their bond to grow and survive the essential fact that they are pawns in a game.

While the story hasn’t changed, listening and reviewing the audio version did stir emotional reactions all over again, with literal snorts of disgust at the behavior of Karolyn DeLeon, matriarch, and rather spineless acceptance of the machinations of his wife from Jack. Of course there was anger, and several moments of “Oh I didn’t remember that part and NOW this fits better”. And then there were the hormone driven, uber sexy steamy scenes that both felt natural and right, and were smattered throughout the story with interesting point of view insights provided in Madi’s or Zach’s voice.

Unfortunately as much as I loved reading the story: the narration provided by Lauren Sweet did not work as well for me. Her voice is perfectly pleasant, and enunciation is correct, but there was a ‘hollow’ sound to the audio recording. When I first thought it could be headset or player related, I listened on different devices: laptop through speakers, earbuds and mixing headphones, then the same options for iPod and lastly through my kindle fire. Technically I don’t know what wasn’t quite “right”, best explanation I have is that it feels like there were two microphones in the audio recording: one close and one far – and only the further one is working properly. Additionally, there were emotional components and inflections missing from her narration: while not technically ‘bad’, there is room for improvement that would have enhanced the story and not just recited it.

What finally appears is a workable version of the story, with great emotional depth and character growth, a complex plot that has several side-stories that all feed into the twists at the end. And it most certainly is worth a read or listen.

About the Book:
Sixteen years ago, Tyne Whitlock cut all ties to her past and left town under the shameful shadow of a teenage pregnancy. Now her fifteen-year-old son is in trouble with the law and she is desperate for help. But reaching out to high-powered attorney Lucas Silver Hawk will tear open the heart-wrenching past in ways Tyne never imagined.
Forced to return to the Delaware Indian community where Lucas was raised, Tyne and Lucas are tempted by the heated passion that consumed them as teens. Tyne rediscovers all the reasons she found this man irresistible, but there are scandalous secrets waiting to be revealed, disgraceful choices made in the past that cannot be denied. Love is a powerful force that could heal them both—if the truth doesn’t rip them apart.

Book Review:

I’ve become a major fan of Donna Fasano’s books, the romances always being ‘approachable’ with characters that not only arrive well defined, but manage to grow and change throughout the story, usually addressing issues that are common in feel to many. In this story, single mother Tyne is trying to manage her catering business while raising her teenaged son. While anyone with a teenager understands the trials that come: having a teen that is mixed race adds a whole other group of concerns and issues into the mix. When Zach is picked up by the police, after curfew, with evidence of guilt all over his person, the arrest leads Tyne to reach out to the only good lawyer she knows, Zach’s father Lucas.

Throughout this story, the points of view and the difficulties that arise from situations caused by decisions made as teenagers, Tyne and Lucas are forced to face one another and work together to prevent Zach making decisions that he will later come to regret or wish to hide. These three characters coming to face choices of personal responsibility, owning your decisions and even the power of letting go of judgments and old shames was particularly effective. As Zach came to learn the importance of honor and reputation for himself: both Tyne and Lucas were forced to revise their own views and take accountability.

I really enjoyed the quiet way that Uncle Jasper became such a fixture to all three characters: his quiet manner and approach without reaction TO events, but always having some bit of wisdom wrapped in a tale managed to allow the characters to find their own aha moments, with gentle nudges. Their growth and ability to incorporate, albeit slowly, the lessons and information, even when they all harbor guilt about their choices made with the best of intentions at the time gives the reader a taste of the struggles that true personal growth entails.

Particularly satisfying was the love connection that rekindled between Lucas and Tyne: even after all the years, their chemistry felt electric, and when they decided to allow impulse to override fear, their scenes were incredibly sensual and steamy. Even in memory, the sexual chemistry between the two was evident: which could have increased Tyne’s parent’s fears beyond their mistrust and misguided impression of Lucas and his Lenape ancestry. To be honest, Tyne the teenaged girl was as invested in ‘hiding’ the relationship with Lucas, fearing her friends’ reactions and her popularity – so everyone had a need to grow.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters were wonderful, Jasper’s parables and stories provided plenty of insight into the differences in cultures, as well as providing some truly unique parenting tips. Lucas and Tyne both managed to grow up from the teens they were, and truly incorporate those changes into the adults they are now. And Zach, as annoying as a teenager can be, truly found a place with friends and the acceptance that every teenager longs for. After devouring this book in one sitting, I can’t help but wish that we all had access to our own Uncle Jasper.
